Volcano Mania

image image image imageThis week in Y6 we began our (very messy) work, making our volcanoes.  We began with cutting out a cardboard base and then adding the sticky, gluey paper mâché.

It was very sticky but lots of fun!

Fantastic week for Year 5 by Robyn and Amelia

Y5 have had a fun filled week!
On Tuesday we had an amazing day. Some children went with Miss Colleen to do some gardening for Wigan in bloom. Last year we won Wigan in bloom and are hoping to win it this year as well.

Also on Tuesday there was a triathlon.  Six Year 5′s competed in the swimming, cycling and running. They all had a lot of fun and would like to compete again next year.

In addition to this while some people were gone on the triathlon a lady came in to do some science. It was amazing we used a pringle tub to make one of the things, also at the end some writing was meant to set on fire and there was something that was meant to make a big bang, but sadly it didn’t work.

As well on Tuesday 2 boys and 2 girls went to a science competition at Bolton School, they did really well.

Junior Speak Stars! Star Reporters Leo and Felicity.

This week we have had a very interesting lesson all about next years junior speak competition, we are all very excited and can’t wait to take part! Mrs Millard and Mel Finch come to talk about the junior speak, and explain what we would have to do. We spoke about all the subjects and learned how to speak under pressure. Three people were chosen to have a go at being the Chair, proposer of the vote thanks and the main speaker. They told us about how to speak in-front of an audience.

In science we have been venturing into the subject of forces and action, we decided to test it ourselves! The task was to make parachutes and test them and see how the air resistance worked on the parachute. We found out that the smaller surface areas drop faster than the the larger surface areas because there was more air resistance the larger the surface area.

We also can’t wait for tomorrow because Year 5 are going to Shevington High School for an amazing time doing sports all day!!!

Sports Day + School Trip + Girls Cricket! By Star Reporters Joseph H and Daisy.

This week was really frantic! There were lots of activities going on, such as…
sports day
school trip
girls cricket
…and many more!
On sports day the yellow team came last, followed by the red team, then the blue, and the WINNERS… GREEN!

On Wednesday, we went on our school trip. Some of us dressed up, ( but most of us didn’t ) Overall it was a great day, but we very much enjoyed getting back home with the running water! ;-)

Talk about a lot of sports! The girls went to Norley Cricket Club to play a full day of non-stop cricket. Out of nine schools we came second! We are now through to the semi-finals on Friday 12th June.

This week was the best week ever!

Music alive!

Today we have all been mesmerised by the musicians who came into school to play us some live music.

We learned about the string family and some of the different instruments. The violin plays the highest notes, then the viola, then the cello, which plays deeper notes and deeper still is the double bass.

We have been offered an amazing opportunity to learn how to play the double bass (for free) at Deanery High School on Thursday nights next term!

I hope you take up this amazing opportunity Year 5!Music alive assembley 001

Swimming success by this weeks Star Reporters Molly and Joe S

Year 5 have been going swimming for the past 5 weeks and have been learning different strokes including; front crawl, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly. On the last week, which was Friday 22nd of May 2015, we had a treat which was a fun day! Everyone had a great time with the floats and jumping in the pool.

We are looking forward to going again when we are in Year 6.
